King Charles Formally Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity
Through a decisive move, King Charles has officially stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his title of prince.
These alterations were made official by publishing letters patent under the official state seal, that have been recorded in the UK's official public record.
The official notice declared: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince of the realm’.”
Another record confirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the peerage list, with immediate effect.
The notice stated: “His Majesty has been pleased by royal warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to ensure the titleholder to be struck from the peerage roll.”
Background of the Decision
This move follows mounting controversy over Andrew's links to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.
Giuffre claimed that she was assaulted by Andrew after being brought by Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has always denied.
Mechanism of Title Removal
The king utilized his monarchical powers—recognized rights held by the sovereign—following consultation with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through legislative action.
Letters patent and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke titles and honors.
Since the Royal Highness designation is granted by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.
Further Actions and Support
After the initial announcement, the senior legal official was instructed to draft the required paperwork for the title removals.
This action also includes Andrew giving up his lease on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room royal property where he has lived for two decades.
Officials fully supported the monarch's move.
Exception
In spite of the stripping of honors, it was confirmed that Mountbatten Windsor will keep his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
